Enhancing Mobility of Elderly Stroke Patients using sustainable Solutions

Overview

In the UK, 60% of stroke survivors are aged 65 years or over and one of the symptoms they have is foot drop. This is presented by the inability to lift the front part of the foot. Custom-made ankle foot orthosis (AFO) is known to correct this disability. However, it takes ~12 weeks for patients to obtain such orthosis in most NHS Trusts whereby they use manual foot-shape capture and manufacturing methods. The proposed solution is to reduce this waiting time to less than 5 days. This project used digitalised foot-shape capture (3D scanning) and manufacturing method (3D-printing) on a healthy person to demonstrate the accelerated pathway to mobility. Using the proven method, biobased material can be 3D-printed for such custom-made AFO. The quicker the elderly patients are mobile, the sooner they gain independence leading to a better quality of life. Next step is trying the workflow on stroke patients.
