Story Builder

Overview

Story Builder is an activity for older people with dementia that offers a structured social experience through the joint creation of stories from images. In Stage 1 of the activity, every participant is a story builder who starts with an image and describes what it means to them: the people, the place, the scents and sounds. In Stage 2, all the images are laid on a table. What is the best order to put them in? Stage 2 involves negotiation. Participants discuss the people in the images and how they are connected, the music associations, tactile impressions, and back stories. A narrative that makes sense of the images is shared and agreed. The facilitator inputs the narrative into the Story Builder website, prints off hard copies and gives them to the participants to keep. Participants are also sent a soft copy that they can forward to friends and family.
